President Trump distributed cash gifts totaling tens of thousands of dollars to high-ranking White House staff members last Christmas, according to financial disclosure forms released by the administration. The documents, published in September 2026, list payments described explicitly as a Cash Gift for Holidays.
Executive assistant Natalie Harp, communications adviser Margo Martin, and Chamberlain Harris, the deputy director of Oval Office operations, each received $45,000 in cash. Walt Nauta, the director of Oval Office operations, received a $20,000 holiday gift, according to annual financial disclosure forms published by the administration.
The cash payments represent a substantial portion of the recipients’ government pay. Harp, Martin, and Harris each earn an annual salary of $150,000, meaning the $45,000 gifts amount to just under one-third of their yearly earnings. Nauta, who earns $175,000 annually in his role, received an amount slightly over one-tenth of his salary.
White House Defense and Ethics Expert Concerns
The unusual disclosures prompted swift debate among ethics lawyers and administration officials regarding federal compensation rules.

However, outside ethics experts raised questions about the legality of supplementing government pay with outside funds. Richard Painter, who served as a White House ethics lawyer in the George W. Bush administration, told reporters that the arrangement runs counter to prohibitions against supplementing federal salaries.

Roles and Proximity of the Aides
The recipients hold prominent positions within Trump’s daily operations. Natalie Harp maintains a constant presence by the president’s side, often recognized for carrying a portable printer to supply him with printed news and social media posts. Margo Martin runs media operations after previously serving as a press assistant and following Trump to Florida following his 2020 defeat. Chamberlain Harris serves as executive assistant and deputy director of Oval Office operations, and was appointed earlier in the year to the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts.
Walt Nauta, who previously worked as a presidential valet, serves alongside them in the West Wing. Nauta previously faced federal charges alongside Trump concerning the handling of classified documents at Mar-a-Lago before those charges were dismissed in 2024.
