United Airlines announced a massive international expansion for summer 2027, adding 10 new international cities and 13 new routes across Europe and Asia. The carrier highlighted new nonstop services to destinations including Slovenia and Luxembourg, alongside the deployment of its new Airbus A321XLR aircraft.
United Airlines is undertaking the largest international network expansion in company history, a move that pushes its global footprint further into secondary markets and remote island escapes. The Chicago-based carrier revealed its summer 2027 route drop, scheduling service to 10 new international cities across Europe and Asia with flights kicking off between March and June 2027.
The announcement extends a decade of aggressive international growth. United has added 58 international destinations to its route map since 2017, bringing its total count of international destinations to more than 160. The airline currently flies to more international destinations than any other U.S. carrier, building on what United CEO Scott Kirby described as a creative and strategic expansion since the pandemic. “The creative and strategic way we’ve expanded our international network since the pandemic has made all the difference, not only for our customers and employees, but also as a way to differentiate United and build a brand focused on customers,” said United CEO Scott Kirby.
New Destinations and Newark Hub Domination
Starting as early as March 2027, the airline will fly to 10 new international cities — including eight no other U.S. airline serves — across Europe and Asia. The annual route drop includes America’s first nonstop flights to Slovenia and Luxembourg in Europe, an all-new destination in Japan, islands in Spain, Portugal, and Italy, and service to two French cities you can’t currently reach without a layover.
The biggest beneficiary of the schedule adjustments is United’s hub at Newark Liberty International Airport, alongside Washington Dulles and San Francisco. Here is the full list of the 10 new destinations and their specific details:
- Ljubljana, Slovenia: Begins May 12; four times weekly on the Boeing 767-400ER from Newark
- Luxembourg City, Luxembourg: Begins April 2; daily on the A321XLR from Newark
- Catania, Sicily, Italy: Begins May 28; four times weekly on the Boeing 767-300ER from Newark
- Olbia, Sardinia, Italy: Begins May 27; three times weekly on the Boeing 767-300ER from Newark
- Ibiza, Spain: Begins May 31; four times weekly on the A321XLR from Newark
- Valencia, Spain: Begins June 2; three times weekly on the A321XLR from Newark
- Marseille, France: Begins June 4; daily on the A321XLR from Newark
- Terceira, Portugal: Begins June 9; three times weekly on the Boeing 737 Max 8 from Newark
- Toulouse, France: Begins April 26; daily on the A321XLR from Washington Dulles
- Okinawa, Japan: Begins March 27; three times weekly on the Boeing 777-200ER from San Francisco
In addition to these new pins on the map, the carrier is launching service on three routes to existing international destinations, including Los Angeles to Osaka, Japan (beginning March 27); Washington, D.C., to Milan, Italy (beginning May 28); and Denver to Paris (beginning May 27). United will also resume service from San Francisco to Tel Aviv on March 28. United stated on Tuesday it expects enough Airbus A321XLR deliveries to support its European expansion next summer, as the carrier pushes into smaller markets and sees travel to the region staying strong into the autumn.

Airbus A321XLR Deployment and Fleet Strategy
United debuted its newest international aircraft — the ‘Born to Explore’ A321XLR — at an event at Newark Liberty International Airport. The aircraft will fly to some of these new cities and features lie-flat seats in United Polaris and Economy Plus seats with extra elbow room across an open middle seat.

United executives emphasize that the route additions target travelers seeking alternative European getaways. The new destinations offer travelers looking for someplace novel and less touristy to explore a ton of new options to consider.
Tickets for the newly announced 2027 international routes are part of the airline’s ongoing global push, which in recent years has been marked by flights to places like Greenland, Mongolia, and Palermo, Italy.
