Who is Asha Sharma? Xbox CEO who lives by clarity is kindness as she tries

Asha Sharma took charge of Microsoft’s Xbox division in February 2026, stepping into the role of Executive Vice President and Chief Executive Officer as the business confronts declining revenue, a workforce of roughly 14,000 employees operating on a thin three percent profit margin, and weaker-than-projected Game Pass growth.

The transition brings a technology executive into the video game industry who reportedly spends a few hours personally resolving player support tickets and gathering direct feedback and guidance from dedicated users following her appointment. As developers and players questioned her takeover of one of the most important companies in the video game industry, she has made it clear that she wants to transform the company quickly through significant job cuts, strategic changes, and a major reallocation of investments.

Leadership Philosophy and Management Style at Microsoft

Sharma’s approach to corporate restructuring centers on an explicit internal mantra she tells her colleagues: Clarity is kindness. During a recent town hall meeting at the offices of the franchise “Minecraft,” she addressed the division directly about the financial realities facing the brand.

“Great companies are incredibly comfortable sharing successes and sharing wins,” and added, “Every company needs to be better at sharing hard things and clear realities.”

Elaborating on her philosophy from her modest office by C-suite standards at Microsoft’s corporate campus, Sharma, a mother of three, noted that this mindset played a key role in her rapid rise through senior leadership positions at companies including Meta Platforms and Instacart. Todd Howard noted her distinct capability to distill complex operational problems.

“She’s uniquely effective at cutting through and communicating clearly, ‘Here’s what the issues are and here’s where the opportunities are.’”

When evaluating the decision to accept the top post at the gaming division, Sharma described her evaluation process in professional terms rather than hesitation over unfamiliar territory in gaming.

‘It wasn’t, “Do I want to do this?” but, “Do I believe the theory of the case that I can add unique value?”’

Career Background and Corporate Experience Before Xbox

Before taking the helm at Xbox, Sharma built a senior leadership track record across major technology and platform companies. She is the second among five siblings whose parents moved from New Zealand to Racine, Wisconsin, where they joined her aunt and her husband, who ran a metal fabrication business. Her father worked at the company while studying for an engineering degree, and his strong work ethic influenced Sharma, who carried the same determination into activities ranging from martial arts to a job collecting rubbish at a local park. She initially hoped to balance her parents’ expectations that she pursue medicine with her passion for sports by becoming a team doctor for the Green Bay Packers.

According to her LinkedIn profile, she holds a Bachelor of Science in Business degree from UMN Carlson School of Management. Her professional trajectory includes early marketing work at Microsoft between 2011 and 2013, followed by serving as the chief operating officer at Porch Group. Between 2017 and 2021, she worked at Meta as vice president for product and engineering. She then joined Instacart as its chief operating officer in 2021 and helped lead the company to an initial public offering and profitability.

Her second stint at Microsoft began in August 2024 as president of CoreAI Product, a role which she held until February 2026. Outside of Microsoft, she has been serving as a board member for Coupang, a Fortune 200 tech platform, since September 2024, and was appointed as a board member for The Home Depot in 2025.

Restructuring Plans and Financial Realities

The challenges confronting Xbox require immediate structural adjustments. Sharma has acknowledged openly in internal meetings and communications that the business is not in good shape right now and that the Game Pass model has not been effective, pushing forward with significant job cuts, strategic changes, and a major reallocation of investments to correct declining revenue margins.

Despite the current health of the division—operating on a profit margin of only three percent across a workforce of approximately 14,000 employees while its subscription service fails to meet earlier projections—she and other top Microsoft executives believe the brand will return to profitability next fiscal year. However, it remains to be seen whether Sharma will be able to turn the declining Xbox business around and deliver on her ambitious growth and profitability targets.
