LIV Golf Faces Bankruptcy and Slashes Player Contracts

LIV Golf is preparing to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection as soon as the week of September 7, 2026, following the expiration of funding from Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund. The league has slashed player settlement offers to a fraction of their guaranteed contracts while laying off most of its workforce.

The professional men’s golf league reached a sudden financial reckoning at the close of its 2026 season. After absorbing more than $5 billion in net operating losses since launching in 2022, Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund declined to extend its financial backing beyond the conclusion of the summer schedule.

Chapter 11 Bankruptcy Plans in New Jersey Federal Court

To clear its books and pave the way for a restructured operation dubbed LIV 2.0, the circuit is preparing a Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing in the federal district court of New Jersey as early as the week of September 7, 2026, according to details published by the Financial Times. The sovereign wealth fund is expected to provide a bankruptcy loan of less than $100 million to assist the process, but will not commit any additional long-term financing.

The financial unraveling forced a hurried end to the summer calendar. The league lopped off its scheduled team championship finale that was set for the final weekend of August in Plymouth, Michigan, moving the player and team championships instead to Indianapolis with stripped-down entertainment offerings and drastically reduced player bonuses.

Workforce Cuts and Mass Layoffs Across the League

In the wake of the season’s abrupt conclusion, LIV Golf laid off a majority of its employees. In a statement provided to Golf Digest, the organization confirmed it had informed many of our colleagues that their employment under LIV 1.0 had concluded.

A LIV Golf spokesperson insisted that remaining personnel are still working toward making LIV 2.0 a reality. However, CEO Scott O’Neill’s efforts to secure a new investor to replace the Public Investment Fund remain unfinalized.

BC Partners Investment Talks and Cents-on-the-Dollar Settlements

An alternative investment management firm called BC Partners is reportedly eyeing a deal, but is waiting for a commitment from a critical mass of the league’s higher-profile players before moving forward. To successfully extract $300 million from BC Partners, the league must clear massive obligations owed to those same star players.

O’Neill has begun offering settlements to current players who are owed millions in guaranteed payments beyond 2026, but the Financial Times reported that the initial proposals are worth just a few cents on the dollar. PIF chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan has spent enough after pouring billions into signing bonuses and prize money since 2022.

Player Dilemmas Involving Jon Rahm and Circuit Sanctions

The restructuring leaves prominent competitors in a difficult position. Jon Rahm signed with LIV Golf toward the end of 2023 for a reported $300 million and confirmed in May that he still has “several years” remaining on his contract.

LIV Golf is now offering a schedule featuring a meager 10 events per calendar year spread across the globe for a minuscule fraction of previously promised money. Meanwhile, the PGA Tour offers no clear route back from the wilderness, and the European tour has indicated it will proceed with fining and banning players who participate in future conflicting LIV Golf events—punishments tied to a longstanding feud Rahm recently settled with the circuit.
