HBO has released the second official trailer for its upcoming television adaptation of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. Starring newcomer Dominic McLaughlin as the lead, the eight-episode debut season is scheduled to premiere on Christmas, launching a multi-season plan to re-adapt the complete book series.
Cast Reveal and Production Details for HBO’s Hogwarts
The second teaser trailer provides an extended look at life at Hogwarts, featuring glimpses of well-known moments from the first book, including Harry using the invisibility cloak, playing quidditch, and facing Professor Snape. Production on the big-budget series began in Hertfordshire, England, in July, led by writer Francesca Gardiner and director Mark Mylod, both known for their work on Succession.
The series centers on newcomer Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, supported by fellow British newcomers Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. The young trio was selected following an extensive casting search across the UK for child actors aged nine to 11.

Surrounding the young leads is a robust cast of established actors stepping into iconic roles. John Lithgow stars as Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore, with Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid.

Casting Adjustments and Behind-the-Scenes Commentary
Last month, Nicholas Hoult stepped back from a previously announced role in the show’s second season amid backlash from individuals opposed to JK Rowling’s views on trans rights. Game of Thrones actor Kit Harington was subsequently announced as Hoult’s replacement to play Gilderoy Lockhart, the defense against the dark arts teacher. Rowling is involved in the HBO series in an advisory capacity as an executive producer.
Several cast members have addressed public discussions surrounding Rowling directly. John Lithgow previously characterized the author’s stance on trans rights in an interview.
Lithgow added that the underlying material centers on positive themes.
“But in Potter canon you see no trace of transphobic sensitivity. [Rowling] has written this meditation of kindness and acceptance. And Dumbledore is a beautiful role.”

Bel Powley, who portrays Aunt Petunia, also commented on the subject in an interview with the Telegraph, stating that she strongly disagree[s] with JK Rowling’s views on gender while noting that the trans community deserves safety, dignity, respect, and total acceptance.
December Premiere and Multi-Season Adaptation Plans
HBO’s reimagining aims to give each novel in the original series its own dedicated season of television, starting with Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone—published as Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone in the United States and select other regions. The eight-episode debut season is set to premiere on HBO on Dec. 25, with subsequent books planned for adaptation in later seasons.
