Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan, are planning to leave the United States and return to the United Kingdom later this month, according to reports from outlets including the KATU. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex intend to relocate with their children, Prince Archie, 7, and Princess Lilibet, 5, to a private, non-royal residence located outside London. The couple’s children have already been enrolled at British schools and are set to start classes in September, as reported by the Guardian.
Prince Harry and Meghan to Return to the United Kingdom
King Charles III was informed of the relocation decision on Sunday. According to Pagesix, the monarch welcomes the opportunity to spend more time with the family in a personal capacity. However, officials and sources emphasize that there will be no change in their status as private individuals, and neither Prince Harry nor Meghan will resume working roles within the royal family. The Prince and Princess of Wales were also informed of the decision.
Background on Departure and Continued Private Status
The move back across the Atlantic comes more than six years after the couple stepped down as senior working royals in early 2020 and moved to California. After initially staying in Los Angeles, they established a permanent home in Montecito, Santa Barbara County, to build their post-royal careers and pursue media contracts. During their time in the U.S., their ventures included deals with platforms like Netflix, which recently adjusted its overall partnership with the couple’s Archewell Productions to a first-look deal.

Despite their return to Britain, the Duke and Duchess are expected to retain their homes in Montecito, California, and in Portugal, where they spent time earlier in the summer. Throughout their time away, family dynamics have remained complex. The couple recently reunited with King Charles III at Highgrove in Gloucestershire during a July visit, marking the first time the monarch had seen his grandchildren in person in more than four years. Concurrently, the Duke of Sussex remains estranged from his brother, Prince William.
Security Challenges and Legal Battles
Security arrangements have served as a persistent point of tension and a major factor in the family’s travel logistics over the years. Prince Harry has previously stated that safety concerns and the lack of automatic police protection prevented him from bringing his wife and children to the UK. In May 2025, the Duke of Sussex lost a legal challenge regarding his security entitlements after stepping down as a working royal.

Additional legal disputes have unfolded concurrently in London courts. Last month, Prince Harry and six other co-claimants—including Elton John and Doreen Lawrence—saw their privacy lawsuit against Associated Newspapers Ltd, publisher of the Daily Mail, dismissed in its entirety by Mr Justice Nicklin. Despite past friction stemming from legal battles and public estrangements, the relocation marks a major shift as the family establishes a primary residence back in the United Kingdom.
