BlizzCon 2026 Opening Ceremony: Starcraft Returns, Diablo V Announced, Warcraft news and more

Blizzard announced during the BlizzCon 2026 Opening Ceremony that the StarCraft franchise is returning after more than a decade of dormancy. Dan Hay, a vice president at Blizzard, took the stage in Anaheim, California, to reveal that the series will come back as an original open-world shooter titled simply STARCRAFT, scheduled to land in Spring 2030.

StarCraft Returns as an Open-World Shooter Slated for 2030

During the presentation, a cinematic trailer focused on the human United Earth Directorate faction preparing to face the Zerg, while the Protoss received only a passing mention. The reveal follows Blizzard’s earlier historical attempt to bring the franchise into the 3D shooter space with StarCraft: Ghost, which was in development before being canceled in 2014.

Diablo V Announced Alongside 30-Year Franchise Legacy

The Diablo universe is expanding as the franchise marks its 30-year legacy. According to Blizzard, Diablo V is scheduled to be unleashed in Spring 2029. The upcoming title takes place after the loss of Sanctuary, where the world has fallen and Diablo has won, asking players what they become when the known world is gone.

In addition to the next mainline installment, a new animated series set in the world of Diablo is currently in development with Netflix. Meanwhile, XBOX players can save 75% off Diablo IV and up to 30% on Diablo II: Resurrected content through September 22.

Overwatch Celebrates Decade Milestone With New Hero and Map

Celebrating its 10-year anniversary, Overwatch used the event to detail its upcoming content. Season 5 introduces Doctrine, a life-draining, vampire-inspired Support Hero equipped with bat-like drones. Doctrine is available to play at the convention and for a limited time from home.

The new hero arrives alongside major reworks for Sombra and Roadhog, plus a new map named Watchpoint: Grimsvötn. Season 5 also concludes The Reign of Talon, marking the end of the first year-long narrative arc in the game’s history. The next Overwatch Spotlight is scheduled for February 2027. Additionally, the event features a halftime show during the Overwatch World Cup by YOASOBI and a closing musical performance on the Main Stage by LE SSERAFIM, alongside an in-game collaboration.

Warcraft Saga Finale and Warcraft III: Reforged Campaign Surprise

Warcraft storytelling reached major milestones with updates on multiple fronts. Blizzard showcased The Last Titan, described as the final chapter of the saga, which brings over two decades of Warcraft storytelling to a close. Further details are expected early next year.

In a surprise announcement, a new Warcraft III: Reforged story titled The Forsaken Kingdom campaign returns players to the fall of Lordaeron and its transformation into the Undercity. Available today, the campaign ships alongside the 3.0 update, featuring a graphics overhaul and a revamped World Editor. For World of Warcraft, a third way to play titled World of Warcraft: Forever launches on November 4, 2026, set in the Vanilla era with three new zones, over 1,000 new quests, nine new dungeons, two new raids, and the Skyborne race.
