Lindsay Clancy Trial Focuses on Psychiatric Care Before Killings

The murder trial of Lindsay Clancy focused heavily on the psychiatric care, medication history, and treatment plans she received in the months before she killed her three young children. Clancy has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder in the deaths of her 5-year-old daughter Cora, 3-year-old son Dawson, and 8-month-old son Callan at their CNN home on January 24, 2023.

Prosecutors, led by assistant district attorney Jennifer Sprague, contend that Clancy acted intentionally, rationally, and swiftly, choosing to handle her mental health issues by manipulating providers, seeking quick fixes, and constantly changing her treatment plans. Conversely, defense attorney Kevin Reddington argues that Clancy should not be held criminally responsible because she was suffering from postpartum psychosis and bipolar disorder, a rare postpregnancy condition that can alter a woman’s sense of reality.

Testimony from Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner Rebecca Jollotta

Rebecca Jollotta, a psychiatric nurse practitioner with CNN’s perinatal behavioral health program, testified as proceedings resumed. Jollotta created a plan to treat Clancy’s anxiety, depression, and insomnia in late November and early December 2022. During cross-examination by Reddington, questioning centered on the prescription drugs provided to Clancy and whether she exhibited signs of bipolar mania.

Jollotta testified that Clancy reported insomnia after taking Zoloft, which kept her awake for 48 straight hours. Jollotta described that reaction as unusual and noted it suggested Clancy might have had underlying bipolar disorder, potentially putting her in a mixed manic or hypomanic state. However, Jollotta stated that Clancy’s symptoms at the time did not fully meet diagnostic criteria for bipolar disorder, and she believed the problems were more likely postpartum depression.

Jollotta also testified that Clancy was actively engaged with her treatment plan, displayed clear and linear thinking, and never indicated she had a plan to harm herself or her children. On December 15, 2022, Clancy and her then-husband, Patrick Clancy, reported persistent intrusive thoughts of suicide, prompting Jollotta to recommend inpatient care at Cbsnews. The following day, Jollotta learned Clancy went to the emergency room but chose to remain outpatient, subsequently attending a program at Women and Infants Hospital of Rhode Island.

Defense Focuses on Medical System and Pharmaceutical Cocktail

The defense team has sought to establish that the mental healthcare system mishandled Clancy’s declining mental health. Earlier in the trial, Reddington sharply questioned Dr. Jennifer Tufts, Clancy’s primary psychiatrist, regarding her expertise, prescribing decisions, and reliance on 25-minute video appointments. Tufts testified that she diagnosed Clancy with generalized anxiety disorder and an adjustment disorder with depressed mood, seeing her via video from September 2022 until the day before the killings.

Tufts stated that Clancy never reported manic episodes, hearing voices, or other signs of psychosis, and never revealed thoughts of harming her children. Clancy is also suing Tufts and other practitioners in civil court, though Tufts testified in the criminal trial that she does not believe she was negligent.

The defense argues that Clancy’s condition worsened on an ever-remixed cocktail of psychiatric medications. Reddington highlighted that Clancy searched Google repeatedly at night for information about her medications and questioned providers about whether her condition stemmed from adverse drug effects and inadequate treatment.
