Newly released text messages show billionaire Elon Musk bragging about using space lasers to help elect Donald Trump in November 2024. According to reporting from NPR, the tech tycoon made the cryptic remarks to an ex-partner shortly before the election results were called.
Text Messages Reveal Musk’s Bizarre Election Claims
Private communications obtained and authenticated by NPR feature Elon Musk writing to influencer Ashley St. Clair in the days leading up to the November 2024 presidential election. The messages appear in a forthcoming documentary titled Musk, directed by Academy Award-winning documentarian Alex Gibney.
In the text exchanges, Musk expressed an unusual level of confidence about the outcome. St. Clair told Gibney that the billionaire possessed a degree of certainty regarding the results that she had never seen before. Before the votes were tallied, Musk allegedly wrote that he planned to unleash the anomaly in the matrix.
When pressed in the messages for clarification about what that meant, the SpaceX founder offered a striking assertion. As detailed by NPR, Musk wrote back that he had 10,000 lasers in space, an apparent reference to his satellite company, SpaceX. Ashley St. Clair is described in the documentary as the mother of one of the Tesla CEO’s children. When Oscar-winning 72-year-old documentarian Alex Gibney posed a question off-camera asking whether the billionaire referred to Starlink, his satellite internet constellation operated by SpaceX, St. Clair responded, I mean, I don't know where else he has space lasers.
Alex Gibney’s Forthcoming Documentary Explores Influence
The text messages form a centerpiece of veteran documentarian Alex Gibney’s film about the billionaire. Gibney, who has in previous films taken on the US military, the Catholic church, Vladimir Putin and Scientology, has been investigating the tech tycoon’s ascent and speaking to people in his orbit since late 2022, before his Maga turn and Trump 2.0. The film presents a comprehensive answer to how on earth one man managed to amass so much money and political influence.

Musk co-founded SpaceX in 2002 and became its CEO, CTO and chief engineer. Gibney’s film reminds audiences that Musk has always been more than happy to go begging to the state for handouts, such as by cosying up to Obama to gain government contracts for SpaceX to launch satellites for Nasa and the military. The film also zooms in on a Tesla press event in June 2013, where Musk unveiled a new battery swap system that promised to remove and replace the drained battery pack of a Model S with a fully charged one in just 90 seconds.
Musk’s involvement in the 2024 presidential race far exceeded traditional political participation. Through his super PAC, America PAC and other political vehicles, the world’s richest person channeled more than $290 million toward Donald Trump’s campaign. Musk spent the better part of the election cycle becoming a highly prominent figure in American politics, heavily financing Donald Trump’s successful campaign and leading the Department of Government Efficiency.
White House Dynamics
After spending big in the 2024 election, Elon Musk was often by President Donald Trump’s side, including attending Cabinet meetings, holding White House press conferences, and accompanying Trump to events. The two men had a tight relationship when Trump tapped the centibillionaire to oversee DOGE, an ultimately ill-fated attempt to cull government spending. It wasn’t long before the relationship went badly awry, culminating in Musk saying Trump’s name was all over the Epstein files and that is the real reason they have not been made public.
The Wall Street Journal has reported that a detente was reached, largely due to back-channel efforts by Vice President JD Vance and White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles. Privately, Trump says he and Musk will never be as close as they once were, according to the president’s aides. Musk is planning to save Trump, whose approval ratings are in the gutter ahead of the midterms, and is expected to spend $100 million on key House and Senate races in November.
