Ipswich Town v Liverpool: How the players rated

Alexander Isak scored twice inside the opening 10 minutes to lead Liverpool to a 2–0 victory over Ipswich Town on Friday near England’s southeast coast, securing the club’s first Premier League win of the season.

It was third time lucky for Liverpool on Friday, as Andoni Iraola’s team claimed their first Premier League victory of the season with a commanding performance near England’s southeast coast. Ipswich Town offered a physical challenge, but two quick goals from Isak extinguished any early contest and set the tone for a comfortable evening.

Alexander Isak Strikes Twice Early to Seal Victory

Fresh from finding the net the previous weekend against Nottingham Forest, Isak wasted no time settling into the match. He scored twice in quick succession inside the opening 10 minutes to give the Reds a comfortable early buffer. Both early goals stemmed from sharp link-up play with Cody Gakpo. On the first occasion, Gakpo delivered a pinpoint pass that Isak met with a blistering near-post finish. Ipswich goalkeeper Kjell Scherpen got a hand to the shot, but the venom carried it into the net. Scherpen was described as desperately poor for Alexander Isak’s early goal, weak and meant Ipswich got off to the worst possible start.

The second goal arrived moments later via another inch-perfect pass from Gakpo, which drew Isak toward the left-hand side of the penalty area. He jinked inside and back out to wrongfoot defender Jacob Greaves, finding the gap around Scherpen to double the advantage. Isak thought he had secured a first-half hat-trick when he ran behind the defense again, but the effort was chalked off by the offside flag after Florian Wirtz provided the critical pass. Isak made an initial run that wasn’t seen for his second goal of the night, momentarily letting out frustration before immediately resetting and making the run again.

Tactical Control and Second-Half Management

The second half brought a much calmer tempo from a Liverpool side in full control. Ipswich lacked the creative power to truly trouble Alisson, who ended the match making five saves in total without ever being genuinely troubled. Liverpool briefly thought they had earned a penalty midway through the second period when Dominik Szoboszlai was manhandled and upended by Leif Davis in the box, but the penalty wasn’t awarded in real time and a VAR review revealed Szoboszlai was offside in the first place.

Ipswich went close to pulling a goal back towards the end when substitute Jack Clarke took a shot that deflected off teammate Issa Diop and didn’t far miss the target. Despite the late pressure, Liverpool’s defense held firm. Virgil van Dijk displayed his usual unruffled self in the face of some frantic Ipswich Town attacking, looking more comfortable than he has been in recent weeks. Jérémy Jacquet played solid alongside Van Dijk, though he was carded for a reckless challenge early in the second half. Ronald Araujo was strong in the air and on the ground on an impressive Premier League debut at right-back, making important interventions by being in the right place at the right time. Milos Kerkez was occasionally troubled by Fatawu’s pace but never in huge difficulties, and his aggressive defending led to Liverpool scoring their first goal.

New Additions and Squad Depth on Display

The fixture also provided a platform for squad integration. Bradley Barcola came on in the 64th minute for Victor Munoz, showing one or two flashes of the lightning pace the £123m signing will bring to Liverpool. Ryan Gravenberch was brought on in the 64th minute for Isak to shut down any potential Ipswich Town revival. Nyoni came on in the 84th minute for Alexis Mac Allister, and Lewis Koumas entered in the 90th minute for Florian Wirtz. Meanwhile, Isak’s early-season form has turned heads, with the Swede already on three goals for 2026–27 just three Premier League games in.

Ipswich manager Kieran McKenna’s side saw Dara O’Shea lead from the front as always, while Issa Diop acted as a towering figure always willing to indulge in the physical changes. Sasa Lukic brought experience to Ipswich Town, Exequiel Palacios tried to bring some composure, and Julio Enciso proved to be Ipswich’s main threat as a tireless presence who never gave up. Liverpool now look ahead with a player in red-hot form who is demanding only the best from those around him and raising their level too.
