The military camp in Dioura, situated in the central Mopti region of Mali, came under attack on Thursday by combatants belonging to the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM). According to reports from regional news outlets, the insurgent group utilized its propaganda channels to assert that its fighters had seized total control of the army barracks during the morning hours. Specifically, the Jnim affirmed in a communiqué that they had taken “le contrôle” of the base before departing.
Local sources confirmed that the attackers entered the military post before subsequently leaving the area, while Malian military aircraft were reportedly mobilized in response to the offensive, with aviation malienne mobilized after the takeover. The Malian Armed Forces (FAMa) issued a brief statement indicating that an attack by armed terrorist groups had occurred in the Dioura sector on Thursday, adding that counteroperations were underway and further updates would be released subsequently.
Recurring Violence at the Dioura Military Base
Thursday’s offensive marks the latest in a succession of high-profile security incidents targeting the strategic desert outpost in central Mali. The Dioura installation has repeatedly drawn insurgent assaults over recent years amid expanding regional instability.
A major precedent occurred on May 23, 2025, when JNIM fighters struck the Dioura military camp in an assault that left 41 Malian soldiers dead, according to security figures cited by international broadcasters. The group published footage at the time purporting to show its occupation of the base. Prior to that, in September 2023, a coalition of rebel groups claimed the temporary takeover of the base during a previous attack.
Broader Security Operations Across Central and Southern Mali
The assault in Mopti coincides with heightened military engagements across multiple regions. Earlier in the week, specifically on Wednesday, the Jnim claimed responsibility for an ambush against a convoy of the army and the Russian Africa Corps near Sikasso. The day before that, an ambush at Sofara left at least 11 dead, consisting of Russian soldiers and Dozo hunters. The army has not communicated regarding these events and, when solicited by RFI, did not follow up.
In response to these movements, the Malian military general staff reported carrying out airstrikes on Wednesday near Bougouni against rallying points harboring numerous terrorists, alongside operations on Tuesday near Koutiala against concentration points of armed terrorist groups, which were successfully dealt with according to the text of the official communiqué.
The operational tempo mirrors similar engagements earlier in the summer. In August, FAMa units defended their military post in San, located in the Ségou region, against an early-morning assault. While affiliate channels of JNIM asserted control over the base during the initial hours, the Malian military maintained that a vigorous counterattack repelled the assault. The Russian Africa Corps contingent operating alongside state forces asserted that more than 40 attackers died during that engagement, though independent verification of casualty figures remained unavailable.
Prisoner Releases and Ongoing Conflict in the North
Simultaneously, the central government and armed factions have engaged in localized prisoner exchanges amid ongoing hostilities in northern sectors. The Azawad Liberation Front (FLA) released 82 Malian soldiers on August 13, according to the state-general of the Armed Forces, who had been detained since the attacks of April 25 against multiple military positions. A subsequent intervention by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) on August 16 facilitated the transfer of six wounded Malian soldiers from Kidal to Gao, followed by the release of 22 additional detained military personnel held by the FLA in the Anéfis sector on August 23 as part of a prisoner exchange.
As military commands evaluate the aftermath of the Dioura raid, official channels have yet to release a comprehensive, verified casualty count for Thursday’s engagement in the Mopti region.
