Square Enix will release Final Fantasy VII Revelation simultaneously across PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 2 on April 8, 2027. Game director Naoki Hamaguchi confirmed that the final trilogy installment features a planet-scale open world accessed via the Highwind airship, alongside a single disc physical release requiring an internet download. Developed by Square Enix Creative Studio One and published by Square Enix, the title brings the iconic RPG story to a close as Cloud and his activist friends race against time to stop Sephiroth, who is close to attaining god status in his quest to harm the planet.
Naoki Hamaguchi Explains Physical Disc Downloads and Single-Disc Compromises
The physical version of Final Fantasy VII Revelation on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X arrives on a single disc and requires an internet connection to download other parts of the game. Previous entries in the remake trilogy utilized two discs—one for installation and one for play—while Nintendo Switch 2 owners receive the game via a game-key card.
Following preorders, some fans voiced concerns and raised questions about the physical discs requiring some internet download. The physical media community and preservation advocates immediately questioned the decision. The X / Twitter account Does it play?, which campaigns for video game preservation, criticized the format by asking What were you thinking, in all honesty?
and stating that The game not getting a proper physical release on any platform is the only detail that should be discussed.

In an interview with IGN, game director Naoki Hamaguchi addressed the backlash.
First and foremost, personally, I'm very happy that we are able to release a physical disc version of FFVII Revelation considering how the entire gaming market, or the landscape, is veering towards the disc-less direction,
Hamaguchi said, referencing Sony’s controversial decision to end production of PlayStation discs from 2028.
Hamaguchi explained that even if Square Enix released Revelation on the same number of discs as Rebirth, the team would still have had to compromise on the quality of the game. Having internal discussions with the development team, the “only choice” was to release the game on a single disc with a forced download to play.
Planet-Scale Open World Exploration Aboard the Highwind
At Gamescom 2026, Final Fantasy VII Revelation offered a glimpse at the enormous final chapter. The narrative drops players into Chapter 4 aboard Cid’s iconic Highwind aerial ship with Yuffie, Barret, Cait Sith, and Vincent, as the group explores islands for resources or makes a beeline for Wutai, which has been significantly expanded for the finale. Meanwhile, Tifa and an unwell Cloud remain separated from the group, leaving the rest of the party to chart their own course through a world that has grown considerably since Rebirth.

For Naoki Hamaguchi, who has guided the project through Final Fantasy VII Remake and Rebirth, that expansion is one of the biggest challenges and opportunities of the finale. The Highwind opens the skies, while flying chocobos and parachuting offer new ways to traverse familiar territory. Junon bears the brunt of Weapons’ attacks in defense of the planet, parts of Gongaga have been flooded, and the grasslands look remarkably different from above. After Remake’s more linear structure and Rebirth’s open-world expansion, Revelation takes that scale to a planet-wide level. Hamaguchi said the Highwind provides a feeling that no other open-world game gives,
while Mai and the game’s side content help guide players through the sprawling landscape without making exploration too stressful. For a full year before Rebirth’s launch, Hamaguchi was wrist-deep in the guts of Revelation—ideating, iterating, and improving—taking inspiration from open-world behemoths like The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Sony’s Horizon series, and Crimson Desert. Hamaguchi also told Deadline that the team painstakingly cemented Vincent and Yuffie into irrevocable mainstays while giving Zack an increasingly important role.
Hands-on previews of Chapter 4 demonstrated free rein to explore wherever players wanted. Taking full control of the Highwind airship, oceans seemingly stretch for miles, and each and every island is packed with enough side content and main quests that choice paralysis started to creep in pretty quickly. The team at Square Enix told players that it would take over 20 hours to see everything there was to see at that moment. However, players also had to click through numerous tutorial pop-ups, fast-forward tips from Chadley, and tell the Monster Assessment Instrument (or MAI) to shut up during the slice. Rebirth previously launched to some discontented murmurs, with Ed Nightingale awarding that game four stars and calling it an overstuffed but lovable re-imagining
, while some consumers called it ‘bloated’.
Platform Performance Challenges on Nintendo Switch 2
With a simultaneous multi-platform release scheduled for April 8, 2027, technical questions surround how smaller hardware will handle the massive scale. At the start of 2026, there were zero Final Fantasy VII Remake games on Switch 2, ahead of the third game launching simultaneously across all platforms. After getting roughly 50 minutes of hands-on time at a recent Square Enix event, reviewers noted that while Revelation is massive, the system could really struggle with it.

This followed previews of Rebirth on Switch 2 earlier in the year, where the system managed the open-zone Grasslands well enough before landing its fair share of portable compromises in the visual and performance departments. From what has been seen of Revelation so far, it makes Rebirth look like a proof of concept, leaving reviewers wondering how Nintendo’s hardware will fare with the vast open world when Revelation launches.
