Jørn Andersen Sentenced to 21 Years for Killing Marita Løfshus Haugen

A Norwegian court has handed down a 21-year preventive detention sentence to 54-year-old Jørn Andersen for the murder of 35-year-old Marita Løfshus Haugen. The ruling, delivered by Trøndelag tingrett, matches the punishment demanded by prosecutors during the trial in Trondheim, where Andersen originally denied criminal liability when proceedings began on August 31.

Haugen, a mother of two, was killed on the evening of December 13 last year while heading to her shift at Bjørnli Gjesteheim on Løkken verk in Orkland. An accidental passerby discovered her body hidden in the snow near a garbage shed roughly ninety minutes after her shift was scheduled to begin at Bjørnlihiet pub.

The court rejected Andersen’s defense that he could not remember the events of that night due to intoxication from alcohol and Valium, dismissing the claim as a tactical strategy. Judges concluded that the evidence was overwhelming and unambiguous, determining that Andersen waited outside in the dark for a prolonged period before attacking with great determination and force.

According to the judgment, Andersen used a machete to inflict fatal wounds to Haugen’s chest and back, causing her to die immediately. Investigators subsequently recovered the weapon behind a nearby garage. Prosecutors detailed that Andersen dragged the victim along the road, placed her in a ditch, and attempted to conceal her body using a red snow shovel containing DNA from both Haugen and Andersen.

Public Prosecutor Per Morten Schjetne stated via TV 2 that it was their view that the defendant, from outside the car, subjected Marita Haugen to violence directed at the head region while she sat in the driver’s seat, before she was reportedly inflicted with fatal stab wounds from the machete outside the vehicle.

Workplace Conflict Preceded the December Attack

Both the victim and the perpetrator were connected to the same hospitality business on Løkken verk, where Andersen lived in his own apartment located in the same building as Bjørnli gjestehjem and Bjørnlihiet pub. Court documents reveal that the two had established an intimate relationship that Haugen attempted to break off after conflict arose between them.

In the days leading up to the killing, Haugen had experienced Andersen as unstable after he failed to accept her rejection, expressing fear and hesitating to go to work. An intervention meeting was held with their employer a few days before the homicide, resulting in an agreement that they would keep their distance from each other and continue as friends, with management directing Andersen not to move close to her.

Legal History and Preventive Detention Rationale

The court imposed preventive detention rather than a standard prison term, finding a high probability that Andersen would commit similar violent offenses in the future, noting that a risk of new serious violent crimes including murder lies latent in him through his adult life. Judges emphasized that his hostility toward partners who seek distance or reject him is a persistent behavioral pattern.

Andersen was previously convicted in 2000 to 15 years in unconditional prison for killing his 16-year-old former partner, Linn Charlott Nesblom, in Meløy in Nordland. While on probation following that sentence, he subjected another former partner to severe violence and threats, leading to an additional preventive detention sentence.

Police apprehended Andersen at Bjørnli gjestehjem approximately one hour after discovering Haugen’s body. In addition to the 21-year sentence with a minimum term of 14 years and 285 days of credit for time spent in custody, the court ordered Andersen to pay restitution to each of the four surviving relatives, bringing total compensation and damages to over three million kroner.
