Kelsea Tafirenyika, wife of President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s twin son Collins, was denied bail by a Harare magistrate after police investigations revealed she allegedly possessed two different identity cards and a cache of narcotics at her Greystone Park home.
President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s daughter-in-law will remain behind bars following a contested bail hearing in Harare. Regional magistrate Marehwanazvo Gofa denied bail to Kelsea Tafirenyika and her uncle, Isaac Jessub, ruling that the existence of multiple identification documents made her a flight risk and that public safety demanded their continued detention.
Identity Discrepancies and Flight Risk Concerns
The prosecution’s case hinged heavily on documentary discrepancies uncovered during the police investigation. During proceedings, the investigating officer told the court that detectives recovered two national identity cards bearing different names linked to the accused. While inquiries with the Civil Registry established that Kelsea Tadiwa Tafirenyika was her genuine identity, a second document was found bearing the name Getrude Badza, which an officer testified did not exist on the registry’s database.

Drug Recoveries Across Greystone Park Residence and Vehicles
The arrests followed a raid conducted on August 4 by detectives from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Drugs and Narcotics unit. Law enforcement officials searched Tafirenyika’s Greystone Park residence and reportedly recovered controlled substances, including pethidine, morphine, and cannabis, along with used syringes discovered directly on her bed. Prosecutors asserted that more than 200 ampoules of pethidine and morphine were found in her bedroom, while five rolls of cannabis were allegedly concealed inside a Lamborghini.
Co-accused Isaac Arab Jessub was similarly implicated after police allegedly found morphine and pethidine inside his Mercedes-Benz. The State opposed bail on multiple fronts, arguing that investigations remain active, the alleged supplier of the drugs has not yet been apprehended, and certain recovered medicines were purportedly intended for foreign markets. The magistrate concluded that no set of bail conditions could adequately manage the danger of the accused fleeing or committing further offenses, declaring, The society should be protected by keeping the accused persons locked,

Defense Assault Claims and Courtroom Inspections
Friday’s court sessions also addressed contentious allegations of police brutality during the arrests. Defense attorney Malvern Mapako told the court that law enforcement officers used excessive force, forced the defendants to surrender their mobile phones, and compelled them to sign seizure certificates under duress.

Although the investigating officer denied any physical abuse, the defense insisted the accused sustained heavy beatings. The magistrate subsequently cleared the courtroom to personally inspect the areas where the defendants claimed to have suffered injuries before ordering mandatory medical examinations. Tafirenyika denies all allegations against her, and the matter has been postponed to August 27 while police continue their inquiries.
