The tour seeks to engage citizens, assess ongoing projects, and demonstrate the government’s commitment to inclusive and accountable governance. During the site visit, the president noted that the development is currently progressing through the procurement process, and expressed optimism that construction works will commence before the end of 2026.
The project forms part of the government’s broader plan to expand and improve airport infrastructure across the country. President Mahama stated, “The project is 24 months and I have been following the process of the procurement. I want us to let it go quickly. There are three airports we will be building. Wa is getting a new airport, the Upper East is getting an airport and then Sunyani is also getting a new airport and so we hope that by the end of the year, we will come back here and we will cut the sword for the airport to start.”
Infrastructure Specs for the Upper East Regional Facility
Designed to provide the Upper East Region with improved air connectivity and support growing economic activity, the Bolgatanga facility incorporates several aviation and safety amenities. The layout includes a 2,200-metre runway capable of handling domestic aircraft, alongside an apron for two aircraft. Ground infrastructure features a modern terminal building, a taxiway, an Air Traffic Control tower, and a dedicated rescue and firefighting facility.
To allow for safe operations at night and during periods of low visibility, airfield lighting will also be installed. The terminal is expected to handle about 100,000 passengers annually, with provision for future expansion as demand increases.
Procurement Status and 24-Month Construction Timeline
While official construction has not yet broken ground while procurement finalizes, contractors have indicated that the project could be delivered ahead of schedule. President Mahama highlighted contractor assurances during his site visit.
“Even though they have given 24 months, the contractors assure us that they can do it in a shorter time than that. And so very soon I will come back, join you, our paramount chiefs and the people of the Upper East to cut the sword on this site for the provision of the airport.”

Broader Itinerary Across the Upper East Region
Beyond the airport inspection, the inspection forms part of President Mahama’s two-day Resetting Ghana Tour. From the airport, the President will inspect progress on the Chuchuliga–Sandema road, commission the completed Community Day Senior High School ‘E’ Block at Paga, and engage residents at a durbar on the rollout of the Free Primary Health Care programme at Zuarungu.
The tour continues on Friday with inspections of projects at the University of Technology and Applied Sciences in Navrongo and the Tongo–Shega–Pelungu road, before concluding with a Citizens Engagement in Bolgatanga.
