Fire Breaks Out at So Uk Estate’s Chuk Shan House
Emergency services received multiple reports at approximately 2:51 a.m. on August 27, 2026, regarding a blaze at a 9th-floor flat in Chuk Shan House within the So Uk Estate in Cheung Sha Wan. The female resident inside the unit also called authorities to report that her portable charger had caught fire before she managed to leave the apartment on her own.
Firefighters arrived at the scene with a hose team and a smoke-diving team, deploying an aerial ladder for rescue operations. The blaze was brought under control and extinguished by 3:29 a.m.
Evacuations, Injuries, and Fatalities Among Pets
Estimates of the scale of the evacuation varied between reports. One news source noted that 78 residents evacuated during the incident, while another cited approximately 150 people forced to leave their homes as thick smoke filled the upper floor.
Medical treatment was required for several individuals. An additional elderly woman felt unwell while fleeing, and a man aged between 40 and 50 collapsed from exhaustion while being escorted to ground level by firefighters.
Fire rescue personnel also searched the gutted flat and recovered four family cats in an unconscious state. Despite immediate resuscitation attempts at the scene, all four animals succumbed to the smoke and heat. Representatives from the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals subsequently attended the property to collect the animal remains.
Initial Investigation and Traffic Disruption
Preliminary findings by the fire services indicate that an external power bank overheated and ignited the blaze. Authorities confirmed that there is currently no evidence pointing to criminal involvement.
The emergency response disrupted local infrastructure, forcing Po On Road to close completely for a period and leaving traffic in the immediate vicinity bottlenecked as fire engines and ambulances crowded the residential complex.
