Ben Saunders, the London-born singer and inaugural winner of The Voice Holland, has died at the age of 43, according to nieuws.nl. Dutch police initiated a major search operation after a 43-year-old man matching Saunders’ description—noted as having tattoos on his head, neck, arms, and hands—was reported missing, as reported by NINE.
Discovery and Confirmation of Death
The search centered around the Rijkerswoerdse Plassen, a recreational lake located near Elst, south of Arnhem. Authorities discovered a body in the water on Tuesday afternoon. Police confirmed that the deceased individual was the singer and stated that no foul play is suspected. Friends, family members, and acquaintances gathered near the lake during the search, later following a departing hearse, according to tvgids.nl and hartvannederland.nl.
Saunders’ brother, Dean Saunders, confirmed the death on Instagram, writing: My little brother died today. I have never felt pain like I feel now.
Rise to Fame on The Voice
Saunders achieved widespread public recognition in late 2010 and early 2011 during the very first season of The Voice Holland. During his blind audition, he performed a rendition of Kings of Leon’s “Use Somebody,” successfully turning all the coaches’ chairs within the first few seconds. He ultimately joined the team coached by Roel van Velzen and won the talent show’s final in January 2011, in an episode watched by more than 3.7 million viewers.
According to background details recounted by Saunders in a podcast hosted by Fernando Halman, he entered the competition almost by accident because his brother Dean had registered him. Following his breakthrough victory, Saunders released successful music, including the number-one single Kill for a Broken Heart,

Personal Life, Setbacks, and Later Years
In the years following his reality television success, Saunders experienced both professional declines and personal challenges. He faced financial difficulties, including issues with a former bookkeeper, and moved with his fiancée Janita Engels and their son to a trailer camp in Arnhem. He also dealt with significant health issues, including back operations, recurring hernias, and an emergency surgery for an abdominal abscess in 2022, which frequently required him to use a cane.
Saunders also had several brushes with the law. In 2015, he was sentenced to 180 hours of community service and ordered to pay restitution for assaulting a traffic controller in Hoorn, and faced further legal penalties for property damage at a cafe in Landsmeer. Additionally, he was known to be a member of the outlawed motorcycle club Satudarah.
Despite these struggles, Saunders expressed a renewed sense of domestic happiness earlier this year, emphasizing how much he valued spending everyday time raising his son. His passing prompted emotional tributes from figures in the Dutch entertainment industry, including former coach Marco Borsato, who shared that his heart was crying over the loss.
