US-led drills to end six days early, South Korea says, amid Trump push for Kim Jong-un talks

South Korea confirmed that joint military drills with the United States will end six days early on Friday. The abrupt truncation follows a directive from U.S. President Donald Trump, who cited his relationship with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and pushed to arrange an in-person meeting this fall.

Seoul’s Joint Chiefs of Staff announced on Wednesday that the annual Ulchi Freedom Shield exercise, which began on Monday, would wrap up on Friday according to a schedule adjustment proposed by the U.S. side. The decision to cut the exercise period short follows a Sunday order from Washington directing the Pentagon to scale back joint military operations.

South Korean foreign minister Cho Hyun revealed at a parliamentary hearing that neither Seoul nor American officials had received advance warning of the presidential directive. Our government officials, of course, and the US government officials hadn’t known about it in advance, Cho told lawmakers.

Pentagon Scales Down Field Training

Alongside the command post exercise, associated joint field training programs are partially reduced, with military planners still working out the details. A Pentagon official confirmed that the U.S. military is substantially cutting back its participation in the allied drills.

Before the exercise commenced, Lt Gen Scott Winter, deputy commander of the United Nations Command, had described the annual deployment as bigger and better than ever while overseeing the armistice. However, the political reality shifted over the weekend when Trump voiced dissatisfaction with the exercises, calling them costly and hostile toward Pyongyang.

Trump Pushes for Autumn Summit With Kim Jong Un

The curtailment of military exercises aligns with a broader diplomatic push by the White House to revive personal talks with North Korea. President Trump is pressing aides to arrange an in-person meeting with Kim Jong Un as early as the northern hemisphere autumn. Discussions center on a potential encounter during Trump’s scheduled trip to Asia in November for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Shenzhen, China.

Speculation about a renewed diplomatic summit intensified after Trump shared an old photograph on social media showing Kim surrounded by military officials next to the caption Hey Donald, we cool … right? The U.S. president told reporters that Kim had responded to his overtures, though he declined to provide further details.

Seoul Navigates Alliance Strains and Calls for Defense Independence

Jennifer Kavanagh, senior fellow and director of military analysis at Defense Priorities, noted that Washington’s reduced footprint could prompt regional allies to accelerate their own defense capabilities. Allies will become more self-sufficient over time, and they will need the United States less, Kavanagh said, pointing to rising defense budgets across Japan, Australia, the Philippines, and South Korea.

Cheong Seong-chang, vice-president of the Seoul-based Sejong Institute think tank, warned that future talks with Pyongyang could prompt Washington to go further by suspending joint exercises entirely or reducing troop levels without consulting Seoul.
