Fans Mourn Beloved Jackie the Eagle Following Death

Jackie, the famous bald eagle whose life at California’s Big Bear Lake was followed by millions of viewers around the world through a livestream, died on August 10 at the age of 14, according to The Guardian. The bird’s death came after more than three weeks of intensive medical care at the Mytwintiers.

Jackie the Celebrated Bald Eagle Dies at Age 14

The eagle was brought to the rescue center on July 18 after she was found weak, disheveled, and unable to fly following a scuffle with two younger eagles along the shores of Big Bear Lake, as reported by Mytwintiers and Wideopencountry. Medical experts discovered she was suffering from severe anemia and suspected she had been sick for weeks before the fight grounded her.

During her time in the intensive care unit, veterinary teams administered around-the-clock monitoring, oxygen therapy, supportive treatment, a blood transfusion, a bone marrow biopsy, and a contrast CT scan. Despite these efforts and consultations with specialists, her condition continued to deteriorate until she passed away in the early hours of August 10, according to Mytwintiers and Wideopencountry. Her remains were subsequently transferred to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.

Global Following and Caretaker Controversies

Jackie and her mate, Shadow, became internet sensations thanks to a popular live nest camera operated by the environmental education nonprofit Friends of Big Bear Valley, drawing millions of devoted fans who watched them build their lives, deal with harsh weather, and raise multiple eaglets together for eight years, as detailed by Abc7chicago and Wideopencountry.

Following her death, fans shared messages of grief and turned their attention toward her caretakers and her former partner. Jenny Voisard, media manager for the Friends of Big Bear Valley, noted that the organization received thousands of comments and emails from people sharing what the eagle meant to them, as reported by AOL. Observers of the eagle cam also noticed that Shadow appeared to be with a new eagle named KD1 just days after Jackie’s death, according to KCRA.

According to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, it is not unusual for a surviving eagle to find a new mate shortly after a partner dies or to continue using the same nest, a point echoed by Voisard regarding the natural progression of wildlife activity in the Big Bear territory.

Conservation Legacy and Land Preservation

Beyond her internet fame, Jackie inspired a massive public campaign to preserve the natural habitat surrounding her home. The Friends of Big Bear Valley launched a $10 million fundraising effort to buy 63 acres of land near the eagles’ nest known as Moon Camp, which served as a key ecological corridor and included the last undisturbed shoreline on the lake.

The successful conservation effort drew broad community support, including backing from a local elementary school and a $5.5 million donation from OpenAI co-founder Greg Brockman and his wife, Anna, as noted by The Guardian and AOL. The non-profit will now permanently steward the protected land.
